Meditation: Benefits & Tips

As a college student, I know how easy it is to let the stress of assignments and due dates get to you. Once one project is finished another one pops up. You may think you don't have enough time to relax, but... you can and you should!

I found this great article called "Meditation for College Students" by Joy from Lawrence University. It talks about why you should start meditating and how you can start. Here's a quick summary:

Meditation:

    1. Decreases stress
      • Activity in the sympathetic nervous system, or the "fight or flight" response, is reduced.
      • Activity in the parasympathetic nervous system, which is associated with times of rest, is increased.
    2. Improves concentration
      • Meditation requires mental energy and "the strength to clear out the mental clutter" training you to concentrate on the present.
    3. Increases overall emotional well-being
      • Meditation is thought to "help improve creativity, happiness, and peace of mind."

How to Meditate?

    1. Concentrate on breathing
      • Allow yourself to focus on the present moment and count each breath.
    1. Let go of all thoughts
      • Let thoughts to come to your mind and let them go.
    2. Keep going, don't give up!
      • Try for shorter sessions and build your way up to longer stretches.

Meditation does not come easily to everyone, but that doesn't mean it can't be accomplished. The hardest part is achieving the right state of mind where your body relaxes completely and your thoughts are cleared.
